  • Define organ banking, cryopreservation, ex vivo perfusion, "high subzero" organ preservation, and metabolic suppression, and discuss their enabling technologies such as computational modeling, CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing, and nanotechnology.
  • Describe the current research efforts underway to realize the possibility of organ banking, including key challenges and scientific opportunities.
  • Explain how these new technologies could change the face of organ donation and transplantation practices and outcomes.
  • Discuss the impact of these technologies on major areas of research in transplantation, such as immune tolerance induction, xenotransplantation, and vascularized composite allotransplantation.
  • Describe recent efforts involving the White House, U.S. science funding agencies, American Society of Transplantation and others to craft a large-scale research effort in organ preservation.
